Energy Saving Pool Pumps
A new law signed by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist Wednesday requires new pool pumps purchased after July 1, 2011, to be capable of operating at multiple speeds to conserve energy. Most pool pumps currently operate at a single one-horsepower speed, according to a release.
The new law will not require pool owners to upgrade to a variable speed pump, but the amount of energy saved from using these pumps translates to savings on the electric bill for the owner, says Jeff Farlow, manager of energy initiatives for Sanford, N.C.-based Pentair Water Pool and Spa, a pool equipment manufacturer.
“Pool pump motors can use more energy than all other home appliances combined, excluding heating and cooling systems. When you multiply that usage by more than a million homes, the electricity savings can be enormous,” he says.
